New Community Climate Micro Grants scheme now open for applications
We’d like to hear from community groups, schools, and organisations who could benefit from a boost for their project.
The scheme offers grants of up to £1,000 to support community-led initiatives that are acting on climate change, engaging residents, and creating a more sustainable, resilient local environment.
From tree planting and wildflower meadows to repair cafes, hosting community events, sewing clubs, and community fridges, the scheme aims to empower people to make a real difference in their neighbourhoods. The grants can be used to launch new ideas or expand existing projects as long as they deliver meaningful environmental benefits and bring local people together.
Funded projects must engage the community on environmental issues and achieve at least one of the following goals:
- Encourage sustainable behaviour
- Improve understanding of climate change and sustainability
- Reduce pollution or emissions
- Improve air quality
- Support biodiversity
- Enhance local climate adaptation
Councillor Justine Rutland, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: ‘We are very pleased to be able to offer these micro grants that will help local community groups carry out climate projects that they have chosen. These grants are about unlocking the power of local communities. Whether it’s planting trees, starting a community garden, or hosting a carbon literacy workshop, small actions can add up to big impacts – especially when people come together. We hope to fund as many as possible.’
Councillor Rob Wormington, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability said: ‘I am proud to support the launch of our Community Climate Micro Grants Scheme. This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering community groups to take meaningful climate action at the grassroots level. We aim to inspire innovation, build resilience, and foster a sense of shared responsibility for our environment. Every step taken by our community brings us closer to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable borough for generations to come.’
