Amber cold weather health alert January 2025

An amber cold weather health alert is in place until Sunday 12 January 2025.

If you can, please check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell in cold weather.

Here are the ways in which you can keep yourself and others safe during periods of cold weather:

  • Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you
  • Check the weather forecast and the news
  • Make sure you have sufficient food and medicine
  • Take simple measures to reduce draughts at home
  • Heat rooms you spend most time in, to 18˚C if you can
  • Keep bedroom windows closed
  • Wear multiple layers of thinner clothing
  • If you’re eligible, get vaccinated against flu and COVID-19
  • Get help if needed. Call NHS 111 or in an emergency 999

You can find more information and advice on staying well in cold weather, covering issues such as financial help, healthy lifestyle, flu vaccinations and heating here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/keep-warm-keep-well-leaflet-gives-advice-on-staying-healthy-in-cold-weather

Because of the drop in temperature and the weather forecast we have activating the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to ensure anyone sleeping rough is offered accommodation during these cold nights.

If you’re worried about someone sleeping rough there’s information here that can help including a link to alert council outreach teams.
