Union flag flies over War Memorial
A new flagpole donated by members of the Tunbridge Wells Branch of the Royal British Legion has been installed at the War Memorial in Royal Tunbridge Wells.
British Legion members raised the funds through a private appeal to purchase the flagpole and the Union Flag which now flies from it, adding colour and visual impact to the site.
The installation of the flagpole comes shortly after the Tunbridge Wells Branch joined the Mayor and the Deputy Lieutenant of Kent at a ceremony marking 100 years since the unveiling of the memorial in February 1923.
John Cohen who heads the Tunbridge Wells Branch thanked Legion members for their generosity to enable the flag and pole to be donated and erected saying: ‘We are delighted to have been able to make this donation to the Borough Council thanks to the generosity of our members. It enables this significant addition to the War Memorial to be put in place. It will add colour and impact to the site which commemorates the sacrifice of 978 servicemen from the Borough during the two World Wars, and to Remembrance Services and ceremonies held there every year.’
Cllr Godfrey Bland, Mayor Tunbridge Wells Borough Council said: ‘The Borough Council greatly appreciates this generous donation from Royal British Legion members. The flag and pole enhances the visual impact of the War Memorial and reminds us of the heavy price borne by Tunbridge Wells families in defending our freedom and values.'
