Holocaust Memorial Day Sunday 27 January

Commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day at the War Memorial, Royal Tunbridge Wells.

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 27 January, the Mayor, Cllr Len Horwood will attend a short ceremony organised by the Royal British Legion at the War Memorial, Royal Tunbridge Wells.

The event takes place at 11am and all are welcome to attend.

The Mayor will place a bouquet of lilies at the memorial to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of people killed under Nazi Persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Torn from home
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 is Torn from home to encourage reflection on the enforced loss of a safe place to call home.

In 1938 - 39 the Kindertransport brought nearly 10,000 unaccompanied children, the majority of them Jewish, from their homes in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland to temporary refuge in Britain. From 1938 and throughout the Second World War Rusthall Beacon, now the Beacon Hotel, Tunbridge Wells was used as a hostel for Jewish refugee children
