Torn from home
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 is Torn from home to encourage reflection on the enforced loss of a safe place to call home.
In 1938 - 39 the Kindertransport brought nearly 10,000 unaccompanied children, the majority of them Jewish, from their homes in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland to temporary refuge in Britain. From 1938 and throughout the Second World War Rusthall Beacon, now the Beacon Hotel, Tunbridge Wells was used as a hostel for Jewish refugee children
