Commonwealth Day 2023
Monday 13 March is Commonwealth Day 2023
The Council marked the occasion as it has done in previous years by inviting young people from local primary schools to visit the town hall to take part in a country-wide Commonwealth flag raising ceremony.
The young people were welcomed by Deputy Mayor Hugh Patterson, and Peter W Blackwell JP DL (retired Deputy Lieutenant ), and in unity with others across the country and Commonwealth, the visitors recited the Commonwealth Affirmation. Unfortunately strong winds made it impossible to go onto the roof to see the flag being raised but the young people were able to unfurl a flag in the council chamber.
Afterwards the young people and their teachers joined the Hugh and Peter in the mayor’s parlour and for a discussion about Commonwealth Day over refreshments and to learn a more about the mayoralty in Tunbridge Wells.
Commonwealth Day is the beginning of a week-long series of events and activities happening around the globe – and 2023 is the tenth anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter and this is the first Commonwealth Day presided over by His Majesty King Charles III.
Young people from the following schools attended:
- Skinners’ Kent Primary School
- Temple Grove Academy
- Claremont Primary School
- St Mark’s Church of England Primary School
