Cycle club meets Council Leader

Council Leader Ben Chapelard recently welcomed Simon Miller from Southborough and District Wheelers cycling club to the Town Hall.

The informal meeting was an opportunity for the two to discuss local cycling issues, and for Ben to learn about the club’s history in this, its 90th year.

Speaking after the visit Ben said: ‘Meeting Simon was a real pleasure. It’s amazing to think that the cycling club has been going for 90 years. It was good to hear about how they’ve been marking their anniversary, and to get the club’s views on cycling locally.’ During the visit Simon Miller presented the council with a framed poster marking the club’s 90 years.

As part of their anniversary celebrations the club organised the very successful Tunbridge Wells Cycling Festival held in Calverley Grounds, Royal Tunbridge Wells in June, which was supported by the council.

Simon Miller (committee member of the Wheelers and one of the festival organisers) said:
‘As one of the largest cycling clubs in the South East with a fantastic history, we were delighted to be able to celebrate our anniversary along with other local clubs including The Kent Velo Girls, The Tunbridge Wells Tri Club and Loop Cycle and Social. Between us, we really do have a very active cycling community in Tunbridge Wells catering for different levels and interests from youth riding to on-road and off-road social riding and racing. It was great to be able to showcase this with such great support from the council.’
