New traffic scheme receives positive feedback

Results from the first detailed review looking at the one-way scheme in the High Street, Royal Tunbridge Wells show that three quarters of businesses questioned are in favour or have yet to form an opinion about the scheme.

With help from Royal Tunbridge Wells Town Forum and Royal Tunbridge Wells Together BID, Council staff carried out the review earlier in September 2020.

Pedestrians and shoppers visiting the High Street and 54 businesses located there were spoken to as part of the exercise.

Welcoming the reduction in traffic

The direction of traffic flow was not a problem for businesses and the majority of pedestrians and shoppers were supportive of the scheme, welcoming the reduction in traffic and the wider pavements.

The visual aspect of the scheme was disliked by both businesses and shoppers alike with the red and white barriers coming in for criticism.

Council Leader Alan McDermott said: ‘There are some positive things to take from what businesses and shoppers said about the scheme so far. The negative views are constructive so we must now look at what we can do to improve those aspects of the scheme. We said at the very start of this project that we would be monitoring it and we will continue to do so.’

We would be pleased to hear your views if you did not take part in the recent review, email businesscovid19@tunbridgewells.gov.uk.
