Climate action grants for community groups

Category: News Published: Thursday 25 June 2026

Local community groups and organisations are invited to apply for the next round of the Community Climate Action Grant – a funding initiative designed to spark and support grassroots climate action projects across the borough.

The Community Climate Action Grant has been allocated £10,000 from the TWBC Local Climate Action Fund for 26/27.

The scheme offers grants of up to £1,500 to help community-led initiatives take action on climate change, engage residents, and create a more sustainable, resilient local environment.

From tree planting and wildflower meadows to repair cafes, host a community event, sewing clubs, and community fridges, the fund aims to empower people to make a tangible difference in their neighbourhoods. The grants can be used to launch new ideas or expand existing projects – so long as they deliver meaningful environmental benefits and bring local people together.

Funded projects must engage the community on environmental issues and achieve at least one of the following goals:

  • Encourage sustainable behaviour
  • Improve understanding of climate change and sustainability
  • Reduce pollution or emissions
  • Improve air quality
  • Support biodiversity
  • Enhance local climate adaptation

We are very pleased to be able to offer these micro grants that will help local community groups carry out climate projects that they have chosen. These grants are about unlocking the power of local communities. Whether it’s planting trees, starting a community garden, or hosting a carbon literacy workshop, small actions can add up to big impacts – especially when people come together. We hope to fund as many as possible.
- Councillor Justine Rutland

"As Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, I am proud to support the launch of our Community Climate Action Grant. This initiative reflects our commitment to empowering community groups to take meaningful climate action at the grassroots level. We aim to inspire innovation, build resilience, and foster a sense of shared responsibility for our environment. Every step taken by our community brings us closer to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable borough for generations to come."
