Council Tax Consultation

Dear Resident,

I am writing to invite you to take part in a consultation on the future of the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

Universal Credit is being introduced in Tunbridge Wells from August 2018. This is a complex issue and could affect the amount of Council Tax reduction that some low income working age households will receive in the future.

Before Universal Credit is introduced, we'd like to know your views on the options we are considering for administering the Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

For a detailed explanation of the changes being considered and their impact, please see our Council Tax Reduction Scheme page (I would recommend you read the background document before responding to the consultation).

Take part in the Consultation

This consultation opens 23 August 2017 and closes on 17 October 2017

Kind Regards

Sheila Coburn

Interim Head of Revenues and Benefits

Why is the Council considering changes?

Since its introduction in April 2013, the scheme has been ‘refreshed’ annually and further changes introduced to ensure that the scheme remains affordable whilst providing support for those most in need. Each year the scheme must be approved by Full Council before 31 January.

Universal Credit has introduced fundamental changes to how the welfare system operates and replaces a number of existing benefits including income support, job seekers allowance, employment support allowance, working tax credits, child tax credits and housing benefit. From August 2018 all new claimants will come under the new system.

In amending the scheme for 2018/19 the intention is to mitigate the impact of Universal Credit on the administration of Council Tax Reduction and billing and collection of Council Tax.
